WHAT SHOULD I BE INFORMED ABOUT WHEN PURCHASING SHEA BUTTER?
What should I be informed about when purchasing Shea butter? Whether you decide to make a purchase at a local boutique, beauty supply store, tradeshow or online company you need to look out for the following information:
- American Shea Butter Institute Seal of Approval: This seal of Approval proves that testing was done for the product and met the Institute’s standards. Even if the product that you purchase does not carry a seal of Approval, ask whether the product the person sells is purchased through a larger company that has met the standards set by the American Shea Butter Institute.
- Processing Method: (Traditional Extraction-best, Mechanical Extraction, or
Hexane Method-Worse.
- Color (Extremely important): Unrefined Shea Butter is Shea Butter that is pure and straight from nature. The color my vary between light gray to medium yellow (you want this color). Refined Shea Butter is Shea Butter that has been bleached but retains a few of its original properties. The color is off –white. Industrialized/Processed (Worst) Shea Butter has been bleached and deodorized. The color appears very white similar to over the counter day time cream. Sometimes Industrialized Shea Butter may appear green.
- Smell: Shea Butter has a natural scent. If the Shea Butter is fresh, the scent is usually stronger. As Shea Butter gets older, the natural scent goes away. Traditionally extracted or Cold-Pressed
Shea Butter
will usually have a nutty and slight smoky scent because of its
preparation under open fire.
- Texture: Shea Butter has a smooth texture. Fresh Shea Butter is usually very soft. When Shea Butter is melted under direct heat or at very high temperatures, the texture changes. The Shea Butter becomes grainy and never returns to its original texture.
